The rudbeckia fulgida var. speciosa commonly known as the blackeyed susan or the black eyed susan flowers are a bold long blooming perennial that is easy to grow and requires little care. The name translates to 'Gold Storm'. Noted for the density of blossoms and foliage it gives the appearance from afar of a solid mass, almost a carpet effect of blooms that grow to a uniform height and last for months. It is very long-lived and tolerant of clay soils and mild drought conditions. However, the plants grow best if watered during dry spells. Such a well-loved flower, the black eyed susan flowers were the Perennial Plant Associations 1999 Perennial Plant of the Year. Heinrich Hagemann, chief gardener of the famous Karl Foerster, discovered this perennial in Czechoslovakia in 1937. However, due to W.W.II, the black eyed susan flowers were not introduced into the trade until 1949. Spring Hill Nurseries also carries other daisy-like blossoming plants. The echinacea purpurea otherwise known as pink coneflower, for instance, is a hit with the butterflies. These drought-resistant, long-lasting daisy-like blooms are bright purple-pink with contrasting maroon centers. The 2 to 4 foot tall plants bloom in mid to late summer. Very hardy and carefree, the coneflower is suitable for zones 3 to 8. Another plant that looks good in a perennial bed with the blackeyed susan flower is the shasta daisy. Color is one of the most exciting aspects of any garden. By selecting a variety of perennials from Spring Hill Nurseries’ selection, you can make a so-so looking garden into a masterpiece. Mixing opposite colors, such as red and green or yellow and violet, makes each color stand out even more, while combining colors from the same “family,” such as blue and green or yellow and orange, makes a more harmonious color scheme. The Alaska Classic is a shasta daisy variety with multiple flowers on each stalk. The carpet of white and yellow daisy blooms 15 to 18" high in early to late summer are pretty anywhere you put them. They are hardy for zones 4 to 9.
