Hardy bleeding heart plants from Spring Hill Nurseries add a distinctive touch to shady areas during the mid to late spring blooming season.

You can enjoy the color and beauty of gorgeous perennials in areas where beds are shaded from the sun.

Spring Hill Nurseries carries a wide selection of shade loving perennials such as the majestic bleeding heart plants.

Distinctive bleeding heart plants from Spring Hill Nurseries are a unique addition to your shade garden. During its mid to late spring blooming season, the long, arching sprays drip with dozens of inflated pink heart-shaped flowers with dainty white tears. A hardy plant, it grows 2 to 3 feet high and may spread to about a 3 foot diameter. The Latin botanical name of this perennial is dicentra spectabilis. Although is a great addition to shade gardens, it grows well in shade, partial shade or full sun. Very hardy, the bleeding heart plants are recommended for zones 2 through 9. Although the finely dissected medium green leaves are attractive, the plant is best recognized for its flowers -- heart shaped (larger than eximia) pendulous racemes to 9" long. This striking red heart flower features a white teardrop during the late spring to early summer blooming season. As they will die out in wet soils, good drainage is a must for the bleeding heart plants. The plant also may die back after flowering to resume growth next spring.

Imagine having your own easy but vibrantly blooming shade garden. There is no reason why you shouldn't enjoy the color and beauty of gorgeous perennials in areas where beds are shaded from the sun. There are many delightful varieties of shade-loving perennials that can be combined to create beds of elegance and charm, provide a long season of floral beauty, and yet won't require constant care. In the Spring Hill Nurseries easy shade garden collection, we group eight varieties of perennials. While our basic design shown is an oval planting, the same coordinated perennials may be arranged in a variety of different ways to fit your planting area. If planted in the oval as suggested, the island bed will look attractive from every direction. Arranging the plants by height allows the taller plants to provide a backdrop for the shorter plants. Low growing edging plants, including colorful Hardy Primrose, cheerful "everblooming" Violas and nodding fragrant Lily-of-the-Valley rim the perimeter. Majestic, bushy bleeding heart plants accent the center of the Spring Hill Nurseries shade garden. Anchusa Azureas provide a splash of bright blue while the exotic-looking Toad Lily provide intermediate height. And, as a finishing touch, there are charming Cyclamen with numerous exotic rose-pink flowers.
