Care Instructions for Heucherella

HeucherellaBotanical name: Heurcherella

  • Sun Requirements: Partial shade to full sun
  • Soil Requirements: Well-drained, hummus-enriched soil
  • Zones: 4-9

The foliage of the heucherella is no bunch of boring green fronds: these shade plants feature lobed leaves in a rainbow of colors! Heurcherella grows with vigor, creating dense mounds of leaves. Bell-shaped flowers appear in the fall.

Soil Preparation:
Till the soil to a depth of 12-15", using a spade or a rototiller. Mix in hummus or bonemeal to increase drainage. You may also want to till in plant food, such as such as Spring Hill’s Advanced Formula Plant Food.

Planting:
Plant your Heucherella plants approximately 12-28” apart, at the same depth at which the plants were potted. Water in lightly. Too much moisture can damage growing shoots.

Continuous Care:
After the plants are established, water regularly during dry periods. Heucherella are fairly drought-resistant, and don’t need much supplemental moisture.
After the growing period, heucherella can be left whole for the winter. Trim any damaged or ragged leaves in the spring.
