Botanical Name: Alcea

The woody stalks of your Hollyhocks have will grow to impressive heights and sprout showy, rounded flowers! Hollyhocks are drought resistant, making them excellent for gardening in dry areas.

Soil preparation:

  1. Spade or rototill the soil to a depth of 12-15".
  2. Amend the soil with compost to increase fertility. Apply Spring Hill’s Advanced Formula Plant Food.

Planting:

Plant hollyhocks 1 1/2 to 2 feet apart. If using potted hollyhocks, plant them at the same depth at which they were potted.

Continuing care:

  • Hollyhocks have a short blooming period, which can be extended by removing dead flowers as soon as they are spent.
  • Most varieties of hollyhocks live only two to three seasons. However, hollyhocks reseed themselves annually. So, you will likely have hollyhocks for years after the original plants have died.
  • Be sure to watch for fungal infections of your plants. Water from below, and treat with a fungicide if a problem develops.
