Astilbe is a work-horse! Review by Becky - Beaverton, OR
Posted on 2015-05-21

Oh, astilbe ... how do I love thee? Let me count the ways. 1) you grow in shade, 2) you tolerate soggy, poorly draining soil, 3) you'll grow in clay. And if there are 3 things our yard has in abundance it's shade, clay, and soggy soil. This plant is a dream. Beautiful, tough, low-maintenance. I planted these along with other bulbs that are supposed to do well in shade - lily of the valley and begonia - and the astilbes were the only plants to ever come up. They're all big and beautiful and just about to bloom. Get this plant!

Ready To Go Right out of Bag Review by WEISS COLEN - Jackson, MS

I was worried because I've never bought rhizome/bulb type plants before, and was worried they would lag behind the mammoth mums I got, but they burst out of the ground in just under two weeks. I can't wait to see the colors.

I bought two sets of the bargain bag mix about 8 years ago, my yard is mostly shade, as I live in a wooded area so I was looking for shade plants. These are terrific, they bloom every year and spread out more each year.

Well worth trying Review by MN Gardener

"I ordered this last year and had great luck with them. They are in a shady area where the soil is moist nearly all of the time. If you were to buy these at a greenhouse you would only get 2 for 19.99. So I ordered two bargain bags this year for another shady area of our yard. They arrived on May 2 ironically as this was a record setting day in southeastern MN with 14 inches of snow. They sat in the box for a week but now are planted and all are about 6"" tall. Great value compared to buying elsewhere!"

Beautiful but... Review by Laurie

I bought this collection years ago and they all lived and bloomed but the red never did well and I mostly have the pink left now but they are spectacular! They smell amazing and have spread nicely. They need alot of water so I planted them in a rather soggy spot in the yard. That spot is no longer so soggy so they kind of solved that problem for me. Haven't had much issue with pests or deer or anything either.

"I planted these 3 weeks ago and most are 6"" tall already. 2 of them are quite a bit smaller. I'm sure they will be just fine though. Great quality."

Great condition Review by Jaclyn - Brookhaven, PA

I received these spring 2010. They arrived as bareroots and I promptly planted around the foundation of my house. I watered once at planting and let nature take its course. All plants produced green and only one (which was a small root at planting) did not flower. I am very satisfied with the variety of colors and the condition in which I received the plants.

Did great Review by Cindy - Laytonsville, MD

"Last year (2010), I bought the astilbe bargain bag to add color among a group of established hostas on the shady side of my house. I had a great experience; the plants arrived and within 2 months they were all at least 18"" tall and blooming. I'm a novice gardener, but spent a lot of time checking and watering these plants to get them established. It was worth the time and energy - they look great among the hostas and even provide a bit of winter interest to the garden. Highly recommend!"

Fast Growth Review by Meg - Boston, MA

"I purchased a total of 8 Astilbe plants and all but one are doing very well. I planted them a week ago and there is already a great deal of new growth on 7 of the plants. All plants are in ""full shade"" areas. I'm very pleased with my purchase."

Some didn't grow. Review by Montana - Houston, Tx

Ordered 2 collections and planted most along the south privacy fence that is shady most of the day. Others I planted near the front covered patio. It seems the ones that get the most sunlight are doing the best. Hope they begin to bloom soon.
