Care Instructions for Your Calla Lilies

Here’s how to get the most enjoyment from the Calla Lilies you ordered from Spring Hill Nurseries®.

  1. Location – Full sun to partial shade.
  2. Planting Distance – 6-8'' apart.
  3. Soil – Prefers well-drained, humus-enriched soil. Likes to grow in moist soil, but does not like to be wet. Soil must have good drainage.
  4. Bloom Time – Early to Midsummer.
  5. Mature Height – 14-22''.
  6. To Plant – Bulb - Bulbs can be planted in the ground or in pots at least 6'' in diameter. Plant 2-3'' deep, with the sprout side up. If planted north of zone 8, dig bulbs in fall when foliage turns yellow or when foliage is damaged by frost.
  7. Water thoroughly after planting.
  8. Hardiness Zone: 8-10.

Calla Lilies are the most popular wedding bouquet flower! Sleek and elegant, they add unmatched beauty to containers and borders, and are long-lasting in a vase as a cut flower, lasting at least two weeks or more. They are very easy to grow and require very little maintenance. Each of the bulbs in our Calla Lily Collection will produce 5-8 blooms. As the bulbs mature, each will send up as many as 10 blooms. Only hardy to zone 8, but in cooler zones they are easy to dig from the garden and store for winter. They are even easier to store if grown in pots. Just move the pots to a garage that stays above freezing during winter.

For optimum results you can improve your soil as follows:

  1. Spade or rototill the soil to a depth of 12-15''.
  2. Soil must have good drainage. Apply Spring Hill’s Advanced Formula Plant Food. (If soil is already rich in garden loam and well drained, the addition of Spring Hill’s Advanced Formula Plant Food will provide the ideal conditions recommended by Spring Hill’s nursery professionals for superior growth and blooming.)

Calla Lilies require very little care. Whether planted in containers or in the ground, water plants enough to keep the soil moist, but not wet. They do not like to be in wet soil.

Flowers are long-lasting, but once they are spent, remove them to keep the plant looking its best. The foliage remains attractive, even when the plant is not in bloom.

Only hardy to zone 8, calla lily bulbs need to be lifted in northern zones, whether planted in the ground or in containers. Dig bulbs when foliage turns yellow or when foliage is damaged by frost. Dry or cure the bulbs for 2-3 days. Store in dry peat during winter in a cool, dry place where they won’t freeze, at 50-55 degrees F. Or, if planted in a container, the container can be moved to a location just above freezing, and stored there during the winter months. Withhold fertilizer and only water enough to keep the soil slightly moist. Once there is no more threat of freezing weather, the container can be moved outside.
