  • Soil requirements: Rich, loamy soil.
  • Bloom time: Late spring or early summer.
  • Zones: 4-9.

Wisteria is among the most coveted plants around the world. This versatile plant is capable of climbing a wall or an arbor and can also be trained as a shrub or a tree. Every spring season it produces cascades of beautiful, fragrant blooms that symbolize the beginning and beauty of spring. Wisteria is often liked by butterflies and bees. They’re extremely hardy and fast-growing.

Wisteria plant is easy to grow but it requires a little care too! By following these easy guidelines, you can enjoy their enchanting beauty for years.

  • Select a location with full sun and well drained, moist soil. Preferred areas would be near a pond or any other water body.
  • Prepare a hole almost as deep as the root ball and three times as wide. Now, plant the root ball in the hole and space them about 10ft. apart.  Prepare a mixture of 1/3 organic compost and 2/3 of garden soil, and fill in the hole with this mix.
  • Water well after planting. New plants require almost 1 in. of water per week until they establish.
  • Feed the plants each spring with a layer of compost at the base. Mulch them to control weed growth and moisture retention.
  • Pruning is required to control growth and encourage flowering. After flowering in late summer, cut back all of the side shoots branching from the main stems up to 6 in.
