Succulents add exotic looks, texture and color to patios, decks and gardens. These easy-care perennials grow well in pots and the garden. Because they store water in their fleshy leaves and stems, succulents are able to resist drought. Some succulents, like hens & chicks and sedums, overwinter well, even in northern gardens. Gardeners count on these unusually formed and colorful plants to add interest to their patio and garden displays. Succulents grow best when they are planted in an area that receives full sun to partial shade and has well-drained soil. Amending the soil with coarse sand or fine gravel, will improve its drainage.
