Hi everyone, I'm Scott Atkinson with Spring Hill Nursery's step-by-step gardening. Today, we're talking about lilacs. It's spring and they are blooming. They smell so good! Lilacs will give you beauty for a lifetime. I'm walking now among some newer varieties here in our test gardens here in Ohio at Spring Hill Nurseries. As you can see, there's all different colors - purple, pink, white. Let's talk a little bit about lilacs. Come on! Lilacs are pretty much maintenance free, but I want you to keep in mind site selection when planting. It's important to pick a site that has good drainage to the soil because lilacs don't like to get their feet wet. Don't pick a spot where water collects after rains and keep in mind you want a neutral to slightly acidic soil, maybe 6 to 7 on the pH scale. Once planted and established, it doesn't take much to keep your lilacs looking nice. When you're getting blooms like this, you want to make sure that the site around the plant also looks good coz these are going to be a standout in your garden. So, make sure that you weed around the stem here, and give it a good mulching and add some compost. The nutrients will always help the lilacs. Keep it weeded, add mulch. That'll always help in periods of drought and also in the winter spell.
