    Product Description

Most European pears need to be stored in a bag in refrigeration for a few weeks to complete ripening. They are not nearly as juicy or sweet unless this is done. In comparison, most Asian pears can be eaten fresh off of the tree. This is one of the reasons why Asian pears have become so popular for backyard orchards. Asian pears also store in refrigeration much longer than European pears. All Asian pears are all-purpose. Use for fresh-eating, cooking/baking, canning, drying, freezing, juice, and jams. Determining the best time to harvest is important and not always obvious. Seeds start out white and progress to dark brown or black. The pear seeds should be dark brown or black before harvest. You can also tell by simply tasting one! (Although, most Asian Pears will improve in flavor if stored in a refrigerator for a month or two, and they will keep in a refrigerator up to January or February) Most Asian pears are quick to bear, often bearing fruit in their 2nd or 3rd year. They also tend to have heavy sets. Removing fruit as soon as the pears are big enough to be seen, will result in larger fruit, and prevent trees from bearing every other year. In 3rd and 4th year, thin down to no more than 50 fruit per tree. Depending on the variety, this can be increased to 250 fruit by the 7th year, and as many as 800 on a mature Asian pear. In warm, humid areas fire blight needs to be controlled with preventative sprays. Spray with a copper fungicide at bud break, and again a week later. All Asian pears have a fireblight rating with 1=the most susceptible to 8=highly resistant. Shipped as dormant, bareroot trees up to 1/4" caliper. Winter chill requirements are listed for each variety. The easiest way to find out what the average hours of winter chill you receive where you live is to check with your County Extension Service. You can also find your chill hours with a Google search. Search for "USDA chill hours". If you don't get enough chill hours in your area, you may get inconsistent fruit set, some years you may not have any fruit set. Why Asian pears should be included in a healthy diet: As with European pears they are a good source of vitamin C, dietary fiber, and they contain a type of flavonoid which has been found to be important for a healthy heart. And they are low in calories! The average pear contains only 98 calories.
