Black Truffle Lobelia

With such brilliant blooms, it's a surprise we'd be fascinated with the leaves behind them, but Black Truffle thrills in both flower and foliage. The foliage emerges nearly black with a texture like slick oil. It's highly dramatic amid the classic greens of other border foliage, and it keeps this intense hue very well. Summer's heat will eventually transform it to a glossy maroon, which is still very striking. The flowers are just what you'd expect from a great Lobelia (also known as Cardinal Flower). These trumpet–shaped blooms appear in tall, architecturally interesting spikes. They signal hummingbirds and butterflies where to find the best nectar, so you'l have plenty of these beneficial pollinators visiting in late summer.
