The rewards of growing butterfly bush are many (mid-summer bloom, fragrance, loads of butterflies) but this cultivar – among the most popular of the dark purple-blues – also gives you tall arching, elegant habit as well as mouth-watering color. In addition to butterflies (including Monarchs) this easy-care shrub attracts hummingbirds. The movement of the arching branches in the summer wind adds another dimension to the flowering border, and the timing of the mid to late-season blooms provides color when it is needed the most. Deliciously fragrant blooms of deep, velvety purple open on wands from midsummer to fall, attracting flocks of pollinators and compliments. This plant is easy and foolproof to grow in full sun, despite heat, drought or poor soil. Treat as a perennial in the north, cutting to the ground in late fall and allowing the arching branches to revive each season. Deer tend to avoid. Buddleia davidii 'Black Knight'
