Make the lilac season last longer with the late-blooming James Macfarlane Lilac. Blooming about two weeks later than many other varieties, it has large clusters of fragrant pink flowers that attract butterflies and hummingbirds. Like other lilacs, it has a pleasing fragrance that lingers on the spring air. You'll want to cut some flower clusters and bring the scent indoors. This low-maintenance, deciduous shrub grows 8-10 ft. tall with a similar spread. It's ideal for planting as an informal, flowering hedge or privacy screen. Its rich, green foliage also makes a gorgeous backdrop for perennials. For best results, plant in well-drained soil and in full sun.
