Fritillarias, also known as Persian Lilies, have starred in formal gardens for centuries, beloved for the shape of their dangling, bell-like flowers. Purple Dynamite boasts bloom spikes resembling foxgloves or delphiniums, in miniature. Gleaming black-purple pendant florets open from the bottom up in elegant progression. Every spike holds as many as thirty pendant flowers, each striking with its shiny, patent-leather color. Fritillaria bulbs have a unique shape with a hollow center, so be sure to plant them in well-drained soil, with the bulb tilted to one side to avoid water accumulation.
