Referred to in clematis circles as P.P.E. for short, this is one of the oldest cultivars there are. There's a lot to love in its performance—it's big, it grows quickly, and is incredibly floriferous all summer long. P.P.E. is great for those just starting out with clematis, as it's durable and easily maintained. The blooms are fully double, with recurved and twisted sepals, looking somewhat like rosettes. They're small to medium flowers but are fascinatingly prone to change; sepals drop, and the resulting pompon center can remain for weeks. It was bred by the historically important French clematis breeder Francis Morel, and is a classic example of why we love the genus. Experts agree as it's a winner of the RHS Award of Garden Merit.
