In 1993, Royal Purple received the Garden Merit Award from England's Royal Horticultural Society. Tolerates deer, drought, and clay soil. As it gets to its mature size of 15' it makes a very impressive specimen tree. Nothing quite like it for eye-catching sprays of smoke. No serious insect or disease problems, so no spraying required. Long lasting summer "smoke" blooms from May to July. As a hedge, it is a class by itself. (You might even say it makes a nice "smoke screen"!) People will stop to ask what kind of plant it is.
